CDN Statement on Vaccines

CDNEE EC & Secretariat is fully vaccinated and even boosted!

Getting vaccinated is crucial to defeating the pandemic. Vaccines have proven their ability to end epidemics and make once deadly diseases a history through building collective immunity.

However, we are seeing that in many Eastern European countries vaccination rates are relatively low while vaccine hesitancy is high. This might be caused by many factors including lack of trust towards the state institutions, unavailability of quality information about vaccines and poorly organized vaccination processes.

At the same time populists and conspiracy theorists are capitalising on vaccine hesitancy, thus promoting themselves and dangerous ideas about vaccines, spreading hateful, violent politics even further.

Meanwhile, as we have the privilege to get the vaccines, there are people for whom vaccines are still not available. It is clear that we cannot end the pandemic with vaccine inequality and it is the responsibility of richer nations to distribute them and waive patents on vaccines.

Yes, it is first and foremost the state’s responsibility to carry out a vaccination campaign, but we see that they largely mismanage this crucial task. Therefore we as young people have a responsibility to encourage friends and family and people around us to get a vaccine, as well as to demand from our states the effective performance of its functions in the field of public health protection.

WHO has announced 2022 might be the last year of the pandemic – let’s make it real!

Get vaccinated and boosted and ask people around you to get vaccinated too.

How climate change affects the women in the rural areas of Eastern Europe

The struggles women in rural areas of the Eastern Europe face are usually overlooked when discussing climate change. Even though women are responsible for 60% of world’s food supply by working in harsh conditions in fields, they are often silenced by figures of authority and the wider society alike. In rural communities, it is notable that climate change significantly affects economic yield of agriculture, and first ones to feel that impact are women. Young people, on the other hand, are migrating from the rural to urban areas. In deeply rural communities, people often depend on natural resources for everyday life. With the arrival of industries, polluters and investors who strive for profit, lifes of people in rural communities are labeled as less important than profit. The investors not only pollute, but destroy the ecosystems that have grown around them. As we can see from examples of brave women all around Eastern Europe, they are ready to fight to protect local natural resources, even if at times they face violence. Their stories deserve to be heard by wider audience, to break the stigma of traditionally labeled “powerless woman”, promote eco-activism in all communities and release women from the shackles of their oppressors. This is why CDN, with its Gender WG decided to join the GEF project “Feminists in the Environmental Movement” with the following activity.

The aim of the activity is to raise voices of young women in rural areas that are being affected by climate change and its causes, as well as share positive stories and bring attention to importance of addressing climate change in an intersectional way.

In this project, we will conduct a 1 day training on journalism for 7 young people from Eastern and Central Europe (CDN MO and PO members, WG members). The training will happen on the 7th of March in Tbilisi, Georgia and will be attached to CDN’s WG meeting, conference and GA. After the training the participants will visit rural areas in their countries that are impacted most by climate change and environmental problems, research and document how they affect young women and make interviews with them. The reporters would be trained to facilitate open and honest conversations and empowering the young women by giving them space to share their experiences with the wider public.

Dear CDN Members and Partner Organisations,

CDN Executive Committee is hereby announcing an open call for a host organisation for CDN 2022 General Assembly (GA) and attached events scheduled for March 7th – March 13th, 2022.

CDN’s General Assembly is a multiple-day event intended for the review of the last year’s work of the Network, legitimizing the plans for the following year, and electing the Executive Committee in charge of executing the Activity Plan for the upcoming year.

CDN is planning to have a 2-Day General Assembly (March 12-13), attached to which would be training for journalists (Gender and Climate project) – TBC (March 7), the Working Groups meeting (March 8-9), and Conference on the Future of Eastern Europe (March 10-11). As this will be a multi-day event including the General Assembly, the preparation will be challenging but at the same time very fulfilling and a valuable experience for any MO or PO of CDN. Moreover, hosting CDN’s General Assembly has several benefits including:

  • gaining experience in hosting an international political event
  • having a space to organise a session during the topical part of the GA
  • visibility via CDN’s social media

Before applying, please have in mind CDN’s document on the Rights and Responsibilities of the host organisation which can be found HERE.

To apply, fill in this APPLICATION FORM (CLOSED) by the 20th of December 2021.

Of course, we will follow the COVID-19 situation and organise the GA accordingly, to ensure a safe and inclusive event for all participants.

The Executive Committee will evaluate the applications and make a decision by the end of December 2021.

For any further questions, don’t hesitate to write to us at office@cdnee.org.
