Introduction

Woman is traditionally placed, especially in Eastern Europe, in a narrow circle of her home and family enabling her to express herself only as a wife and a mother. Choosing to follow her aspirations, ambitions, and ideas is often considered with a negative connotation. By exchanging experiences from different societies we wish to find means for preventing these social problems to occur.

We would also like to find main problems that occur due to gender stereotypes and a lack of gender equality, through discussions and debates and we would also like to find out how young people realize gender in different societies in South- Eastern Europe compared also with the view that Western Europe has on it.

We found that young people have very different and sometimes highly opposite views on the issue of sexual differences (many of them are directly affected by the lack of understanding). That is why we wish to open a discussion on it, using those different ideas in order to explore this subject deeper. Through dialogue, using facts, experiences and knowledge we wish to explore how and why young people think the way they do and to enable acceptance of different preferences.

Sex trafficking momentarily represents a problem in many South- Eastern European countries in transition. Due to a lack of interest from the official part as well the knowledge of what it represents, many young people mainly female are deprived of their basic human rights and are literary being treated as objects.

This project should use as a base from which further actions are to be made as an attempt to make South Eastern Europe more open for respect of human rights.

Aims

• Women rights, place in modern society, involvement in politics, emancipation

• Gender – the understanding of gender, gender stereotypes, gender conformity, gender roles, gender equality in South – Eastern Europe

• Sex trafficking as an important problem in South – Eastern Europe

• Sexual freedom and sexual differences

In South-Eastern Europe woman is traditionally placed in a narrow circle of her home and family enabling her to express herself only as a wife and a mother. Choosing to follow her aspirations, ambitions, and ideas is often considered with a negative connotation. Women in politics are judged on different standards than men…, and many other problems women have in SEE. By exchanging experiences from different societies we wish to find means for preventing these social problems to occur.

Second issue in focus is gender. There is also a large difference in views on these issues among different cultures. We would like to find main problems that occur due to gender stereotypes and a lack of gender equality, through discussions and debates and we would also like to find out how young people realize gender in different societies in South- Eastern Europe compared also with the view that Western Europe has on it. Through this seminar we would like to support and open space for gender equality.

The third aim of our project is the question of sexual differences and sexual freedom. In many societies especially in the South Eastern Europe sex is a taboo – it is not openly expressed. Usually it is shown as something shameful and disgraceful. There is also a large difference in views on these issues among different cultures. This is the issue that is not regarded with an open mind.

The participants of this seminar will try to work on possible solutions for this problem by trying to raise public awareness and influence on authorities to take an action.

Objectives

The nature of this project is that by gathering young people from Europe, especially SEE, through sharing experiences and discussion work we learn more about problems that exist in our societies. We have realized that even though we are in the twenty first century many of our ideas and views of the world are based on conservative and in many cases biased and prejudicial principles.

Therefore prejudice and bigotry often deprive people of their basic human rights. Since young people live and work in these societies they are directly affected by these problems. This project wants to connect young people from SEE countries, to support sharing ideas and opinions on these socially very important and difficult issues, in order to gather information and give various possible solutions for them. Through our work we will also promote rising public awareness and education. By focusing our attention on the main causes of the problems of lack of gender equality, sexual freedom, emancipation, etc. we will further on deal with them through our network.

We want to promote: young people taking initiative in solving existing problems in their countries by means of intercultural dialogue, human rights education, fighting exclusion; more young women taking active role in politics and other spheres of social life, emancipation.

This project should use as a base from which further actions are to be made as an attempt to make South Eastern Europe more open for respect of human rights.

Description of the methodology and main programme elements

The seminar program will consist of workshops, educational games, discussion groups, role play, open space technology workshop and lectures. Through different methods of learning we want to experience how democracy works. Additionally working groups on specific issues will be formed to craft stand points of CDN and as well to start practical future project co-operation.

We plan to have a visit from local authorities, organizations, NGO’s and try to identify different aspects on these issues and find role for young people in dealing with these issues. Visit and discussion with local young people will add to better understanding of their view and problems and participants will learn from their experience and be able to share their own.

Photos, videos and texts will be created aiming to support future activities by participants and organisation to continue the work we have started.
